Orange 00420239011111
I’ve been getting calls, sometimes four or five a day, from the number 00420239011111, sometimes 001420239011111. The phone rings three times then stops, just before the answering service kicks in.
Now, I make a habit of not responding to numbers I don’t recognise on my personal mobile so no harm was done, but these calls have become increasingly persistent. I googled the number out of curiosity and discovered what I had already suspected. An automated dialler originating in Czechoslovakia. If the user calls back, it’s a premium rate international call.
So yesterday, out of a sense of good citizenship I called Orange, to tell them about the scam and ask them to block the number. A service that they advertise on their web site. The first operator told me there was no such service and that it was impossible to block calls. I told them it was on their web site, they put the phone down.
I called back and got a different person. This operator said that it is possible, but only from the phone. They helpfully confirmed that it would not be possible from my phone. I told them that they should make a note of the number and perhaps investigate it – after all, somebody is targeting the Orange network and they have a responsibility to protect their customers. Don’t they?
The operator sounded exasperated and repeated the advice that my handset would not be able to block the calls. I told him I understood this and asked him why Orange appeared to be so disinterested in protecting their customers. He put me on hold and conferred with his supervisor. After several minutes he came back and said that they would make a note of the complaint and pass it up to management, following with the line “Is there anything else I can do for you today?”
Resisting the temptation to point out that they had actually done nothing so far to help me today, I asked him why he had omitted to take down the number if he was going to pass the complaint to management. I suggested that I might not look so favourably on Orange as a provider even though I’ve been a customer for over ten years, if nothing was done about this problem.
Reluctantly, he took down the number and promised somebody would call me back. They didn’t.
So there is a computer, somewhere in the Czech republic furiously dialling numbers on the Orange network, basically stealing money from the unwary. Orange quite clearly couldn’t care less. And then the penny dropped. How stupid of me – it’s the Big Society. If I want something done about this I’ll have to do it myself. Well the first thing I’m going to do is to add the numbers to my address book and set it to direct all calls straight to the answering machine. Now why couldn’t Orange have suggested that?

I’ve had lots of calls from this number – finally answered it just now after Orange confirmed they couldn’t block the number – the person on the other end claimed to be from Orange and knew my date of birth and account details – now i’m panicking!

That is a little scary – sounds like a list of customer details has been ‘leaked’ from Orange. Hopefully not including banking details.

Divert it to your answering machine – that way it will cost them, they’ll soon stop.

Notify Ofcom at this address:
https://stakeholders.ofcom.org.uk/tell-us/silent-calls
The more people that complain, the more chance there is of them forcing the telephone service provider to investigate.

For those people who can’t do what Chris suggests about call forwarding because their phone won’t let them, save the number to your phonebook and assign it a ‘Silent’ Ringtone so it’ll never disturb you – it will just be a missed call on your phone then!

Great idea Carlioto, since I diverted these calls to answering machine they have dropped to one or so a week. Make ‘em pay!

Ofcom are investigating, quote reference: 1-164365657 and it will tie in with my complaint.

I’m still getting this calls, with varying frequency.
Turns out OFCOM are only logging the nuisance calls, not investigating them.
For those of you wanting to stop this nuisance from happening to others: the Czech’s have their own version of OFCOM called Českého Telekomunikačníhu Uřadu (CTU). You can complain (in English) to their main email address: podatelna@ctu.cz and they forward it onto the relevant department.
Let’s hope they’re efficient and harsh in the penalties!

Me too, the frequency has dropped to about one or two a day and since they go to my answerphone there is some satisfaction in knowing the call is being charged. Thanks for the info – I’ll certainly take it forward.

I’ve just started getting calls from this number and because it looked from abroad I did not answer it I will try to put it to answer phone but will this cost me money?

No – most handsets have a setting to direct calls from numbers in your address book direct to the answerphone. It costs them money, but not you!

So I’m getting these calls too. Also, I’m getting these scam-texts about loans of up to 15k being approved, “just reply “stop” (which I obviously won’t do) if you wanna opt-out..” blah blah. My questions are: is there anyway I can loose money and get scammed for real by these weird phone calls and texts? Also, If everybody contacts Orange, surely it will have some kind of effect?

i called this number back twice tryin to get back to them not knowin it is a scam what will happen?!?!?!?! do i need to worry???
Chloé
June 9, 2011 at 3:46 pm
Assuming you weren’t connected, nothing to worry about. If you did get through, then you might find its a premium rate line, which might be expensive. I wouldn’t worry too much though, theses people rely on a lot of people to generate a little profit each for every call.

Hello everyone. i’ve also been getting these call’s from that horrendous long number and bizarre text’s saying i can claim from my accident. oh How tempting it is to have 15k! do they think i was born yesterday? well i was when THAT number called me. i answered it not looking at the caller id screen and it was an automated message from icon? if i want to know more, call them back. to which i obviously haven’t. couldn’t they think of a less conspicuous name?
my question is, would i have been charged by answering this call?
jamie.g
June 15, 2011 at 2:36 pm
You would have been charged for calling them back. Assuming it is a premium rate number, then they would get a percentage of that charge.

How can you stop this number??
Mr. Bill
July 27, 2011 at 8:18 pm
This number is from an outsourcer working on behalf of Orange called Icon. They are based in Prague and call you to offer you orange broadband products using a script pertaining to customer loyalty even though any customer is eligible. There is nothing to worry about, it is not a scam and you will not be charged for answering the call. You would only be charged for calling the number back.
I know this as I used to work for Orange.
Ryan

Thanks Ryan – I had begun to suspect this was the case. However it leaves a few questions unanswered.
1. Why when I pursued it with Orange did they not acknowledge that it was their outsourcing people?
2. Last October it seemed like they were calling every hour – I’m sure that breaks the rules on cold calling.
3. After so many complaints, to Orange, Ofcom etc etc – why are they still used by Orange?
I’m glad it turns out not to be a scam – though the number of people who call the number back and get charged for an international call must be high. However I do think this is a very poor practice from a company that I once rated highly.

Its not an outsourcer for Orange! I am a T Mobile customer and i’ve just had the call!!! Do not trust these people. As advised just send it to voicemail, its a very unwanted call.

November 30, 2011 at 6:10 pm
so why is it happening to 3 customers?

Because the number is an outsourcing company – used initially by Orange and increasingly by other telecoms?

This is a bit misleading, the number is a local Czech number which isn’t dial-able from the UK, it isnt even a Czech premium rate number..
1. No of course you don’t get charged for answering the phones this isnt the USA, we only pay for outbound calls.
2. The number doesn’t work if you call it (“the number you have dialed has not been recognized”)
Its a sales call but nothing malicious, credit for actually using their number instead of withholding or trying to spoof a UK number.

I just received a call from this number. The man on the end of the phone told me that he was calling from Orange and explained that since I had been a loyal Orange customer, that he would be able to offer me a cheaper landline package. I confirm that the man calling sounded like he was from Eastern/Central Europe, so could well be from Czechoslovakia.
He then proceeded to ask me about my landline details with which my response was “You’re not calling from Orange are you?”. He tried to convince me that he was from Orange and persisted to get my landline details. I told him I didn’t want what he was offering; to which he replied with “you don’t want to save money?”. I said no and that was the end of that.
They are clearly not from Orange and attempting to prey on those who may be a lot more gullible.

I got a call from this number the first time today. As I am a freelancer I get calls from many unrecognised numbers. This time it was a pre-recorded message saying something along the line “if you want to know why we call you, call 0800…” ( I hung up before it could finish). I just wonder: 0800 in the U.K. is a free number, but this call bears all the hallmarks of scam, so how does it work?
The next thing I did was to add this number to my phone-book, gave its name as “Phone Scam”, and on my phone’s address book editing stage there is an option called “Block this number”, which I enabled for this caller. I suggest everyone does the same if this option is available to you.

Glad to see they are still at it, scam or just a nuisance call, its still unwanted. I ignored the call, saved them as Czech scam line to my contacts then blocked them as a caller from my address book, shouldn’t be hearing from them again!
